The remnants of Hurricane Ida caused heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash flooding in the New York region since yesterday evening. As a result, last night the Mayor of New York issued a “Weather Emergency Declaration” which closed city streets to private vehicular traffic from 11.45 p.m. on Wednesday, 1 September to 5.00 a.m. Thursday, 2 September.
In addition to flooding in some areas, public transport has been affected. As of 5 a.m. this morning, the MTA is reporting that subway service is largely suspended. Other public transport in the region is also likely to be impacted.
The United Nations Headquarters complex was only lightly impacted and will be open today, Thursday, 2 September.
However, staff should take travel conditions into account before travelling, and subject to exigencies of service, managers should exercise their discretion in allowing staff to telecommute.
